WSD2013 begins today!

Wales welcomes the world

World Stage Design 2013 begins in Cardiff today,(September 5), bringing with it a wealth of show stopping events and experiences for all to enjoy.  This festival of performance design will see thousands of international designers, performers, artists and theatre industry experts travel to Cardiff for the week, creating for everyone a vibrant selection of things to do, things to see and things to get involved with.

Throughout the week there will be over 200 events happening in the city, and include:

The Performances

Sept 5 - 14

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and other Cardiff venues

Over 40 live performances have travelled from 20 countries to perform at the festival.  Ranging from dance to physical theatre, interactive events to puppetry, the performances will take place daily from September 5. 

Many events are free, and others are only £6.

The Festival - Scenofest

Sept 5 - 14

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama

Over 150 hands on workshops, masterclasses and seminars with leading international designers covering every aspect of performance design.  Hear Vin Burnham, costume designer for Lady Gaga and Batman Returns, speak about her work; Attend a talk with award winning lighting designer Tim Routledge as he discusses lighting the London 2012 Olympics; Watch puppet master Max Humphries at work in an open workshop - his recent designs includes The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The Exhibition

Sept 8 - 14

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama

Daily 9:30am - 8pm

The exhibition showcases design work from over 100 international designers in one space - exhibits range from original costumes, scale models, props, sketches and photographs and interactive lighting and sound exhibits.  Come and find out how the work of the designers behind the scenes can make the events we all watch that bit more special.

The Marketplace

Sept 8 - 14

St Mary's Street / High Street daily parade 11:00 - 11:30 am

A visual delight - a marketplace of upcycled portable carts have been made by designers and creatives and will bring the festival out into Cardiff. These unique carts will include puppetry shows, live performances, an edible cart, a confessional cart, and even a ‘make your mark' on a painting cart. 

Companies taking the carts over include Anne Frank Wales, Kitsch 'N' Sync, National Theatre of Wales, Artist in Residence Kyle Legall, Yve Blake, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and the Transplantable Garden project.
