The SMA is running the first ever UK wide census of all UK stage management

15th Feb 2013

On Friday 15 February 2013 the Stage Management Association is undertaking the first ever national census of all stage management in the UK.

Since 1954 the Stage Management Association has been supporting and promoting stage management members working in theatres and venues around the country. This is the first time that a census has been run and it will include everyone working in professional stage management in the UK.

Executive Director of the SMA Andy Rowley comments "In the many years since the SMA was formed we have never known how many stage managers were actually working across the country. The National Stage Management Census will give us this up to date information about the working lives and opportunities for stage management, plus feedback on their experiences in the industry on one day in February".

The census is being run by the SMA but it is open to all stage management. The census form is available from Tuesday 12 February 2013 to all SMA Professional, Graduate and working Associate Members, and to the hundreds of other professional stage managers who have also registered to receive it.  The census is now open and available on the SMA Website homepage: www.stagemanagementassociation.co.uk

The short form can be completed online in around 5 minutes, and must be completed by end of Tuesday 19 February. Responses are confidential and no individual will be identified in the census results, or their personal information used for any other purpose than running the census and validating responses.

The SMA believes that the census will also be an opportunity to assess the health of the wider industry; Rowley comments "stage managers are working at the creative heart of just about all theatre shows and events in this country. The information and feedback that we gather from them will act as a 'litmus test' for the theatre industry as a whole at a time of change and new challenge
