National Theatre of Scotland launches trainee director scheme

16th May 2011

The Directors Placement Programme, funded as part of the NTS “pioneering partnership” with the Bank of Scotland, will pay £275 per week, plus travel and accommodation. The company is looking for emerging directors who want to develop their skills and connect with artists and audiences.

Commenting on the programme, NTS artistic director Vicky Featherstone said that it was “a vital step in our mission to make the best possible theatre in Scotland”. She added: “Home-grown directors with a wealth of experience and talent are the key to creating a sustainable and world-renowned theatre culture. This opportunity is an important part of that journey.”

The ten-week placements will provide the opportunity to work with either NTS associate director John Tiffany, Vicky Featherstone or Graham McLaren, founder of Theatre Babel. Deadline for applications is May 31.

Tiffany is directing an adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s novel The Missing, merging reportage, social history and memory, at the Glasgow Tramway in September. Featherstone is directing Abi Morgan’s new play 27, a meditation on religious faith about a group of nuns involved in a study on Alzheimer’s, in a co-production with Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum in October. McLaren’s “boutique retelling” of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol using actors and puppets from the workshop of Gavin Glover, will take place in Glasgow over the Christmas period.

A job pack and further details of the trainee posts are available on the NTS website at www.nationaltheatrescotland.com/jobs
