Somerset County Council cuts funding to cultural organisations
10th Nov 2010
The local authority currently funds 10 cultural organisations directly, which are known as “key strategic organisations” and include the Brewhouse Theatre. The money will be axed from next year.
A second £160,000 pot, which supports the county’s creative industries, will be retained. A spokesperson for the council said that some of this money would now be used to help the arts organisations become “self-funding and self-sustaining”, not for performances.
The council spokesperson stressed the policy on the creative industries and arts funds will be formalised in the next month.
The council’s decision will impact its 2011-14 budget.
