Cuts to Derby arts projects not as deep as feared

27th Oct 2010

The Arts Council yesterday revealed it would have to slash the amount it gave to organisations by 6.9 per cent next year because of Government reductions in its own grant funding.

Derby Live, the city council's arts arm, receives about £779,000 of Arts Council funding so the 6.9 per cent reduction will mean a loss of about £53,000 which goes to producing theatre in the city.

For Quad, the city's arts and media centre, that equates to a loss of £30,000 of funding.

But director Keith Jeffrey had been preparing for worse.

He said: "We were warned to prepare for cuts of 10 per cent in 2011-12.

"It is too early to say what the exact impact will be but we have known cuts were coming and have reshaped our organisation to enable us to be more commercially successful so we are hoping to offset the cuts by generating income."

Other organisations which rely on Arts Council funding include orchestra Sinfonia Viva and dance organisation Deda.

For Sinfonia Viva the cuts will mean a loss of about £13,000 to £14,000. For Deda that will be nearer £17,500.
