Sound for Performance

I have been involved with performance sound professionally since 1978 working in a number of repertory theatres, including Leicester Haymarket, Newcastle Playhouse and Bolton Octagon.

Since 1990, I have worked as a freelance Theatre Sound Designer with experience ranging from the London
Fringe through to West End and National/International touring.

I also work as Sound Engineer for live music. Although this takes in all genres of music, I prefer to specialise in contemporary classical, electro-acoustic, contemporary jazz, folk and world/roots music.

I have also worked with contemporary dance and physical theatre companies, often running audio-visual for their productions alongside the sound aspects.

In addition, I have experience in lighting design, primarily with dance companies, and have worked as a
production/technical manager for various companies.

In recent years, I have been involved as a Sound Artist on several projects, including burning an upright piano
and sawing a cello in half. In this field, I have also become a Composer of electro-acoustic music and a Musician playing the No-Input Mixing Board.

Recent experience includes:

Sound Design: Arcola/Belgrade:"Uncle Vanya"; Bike Shed Theatre: "Waiting for Lefty"; Red Handed Theatre Company: "Palace of the End" [Arcola]; Seabright Productions: "Lockerbie: Unfinished Business" [Fringe first winner at Gilded Balloon and subsequent tour]; The Steam Industry: "The Notebook of Trigorin [Finsborough]; and many Wrestling School productions since 2000.

Production Sound Engineer: Donmar Warehouse: "King Lear" [UK tour]; Orbital Sound: "Alladin" [Milton Keynes Theatre]; and Ornital Sound: Gilded Balloon seasons at Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 2002.

Sound Engineer: The KOSH: "The Storeroom" [UK rural tour]; Camille O'Sullivan: "Chameleon" [Music Room at Assembly @ George Street, Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Royal Festival Hall]; Mike Westbrook: "Glad Day - The Choral Version [various venues in Devon]; and numerous concerts with pianocircus; electric voice theatre; Red Priest, Errollyn Wallen, Cleveland Watkiss and Lisa Knapp amongst others.
